European Off Road Tours
How does traveling through the Pyrenees, Alps or Portugal via high mountain passes, deserts, forests and dried up river beds sound?
We thought so too, so we began planning trips for 2024 and 2025...

As with our UK tours they're all small groups and in full accordance with local guidelines and rules.
And, as with our UK tours, the accommodation is all either hotel or fully serviced campsite based. This means you don't need to have a purpose built "overland" 4x4, just the same vehicle that you go green laning in the UK with is absolutely fine.
Our support vehicle will have all of the essentials on board and a fridge to keep drinks and food nice and fresh during the hottest times of the day. So all you'll need are good off road biased tyres (plus a full size spare and tools to change it), basic recovery equipment (tow strap and points to attach to your vehicle) and a sense of adventure...

Pyrenees and Sierras Tour
Dates 17th - 28th October 2024
Price £2600 per car
Based on 2 people sharing
Always fancied a tour across a European mountain range but haven't got a dedicated 4x4 with all the necessary equipment to live off grid for days on end? Then maybe this is the tour you've been waiting for...

This epic 10 day tour is effectively split into 2 parts. With the first 6 days based deep in the Basque, Navarra, Aragon and Catalunya regions of the Pyrenees mountain range and the second part being 4 days touring through the north western Sierra's of the Aragon and La Rioja regions. All the while knowing that each night there's a hot shower, a restaurant, plenty of cold drinks and a comfortable bed waiting for you.

The purpose of this tour is to bring likeminded people together who maybe haven't got the spare funds to buy and modify a specialist 4x4 purely for off grid travel and camping. To get the absolute best from our Pyrenees tour you will need a 4x4 or AWD vehicle with above average ground clearance, appropriate off road biased tyres and a full size spare (no space savers unfortunately) and a willingness to get stuck in and "have a go". As with genuine overlanding, the challenge isn't the terrain it's all about being there and experiencing new things.
That said, spending 10 days and hundreds of miles on rough gravel and rocky roads isn't exactly a walk in the park...

17th Oct, Day 1. Arrival in Spain. Assuming you depart your ferry at around 13:30, you'll begin your drive north and to our first hotel near the town on San Sebastian. Depending on what you decide to do on the way, you have all afternoon to make the short journey and you'll have plenty of time to top up with fuel and snacks.
18th Oct, Day 2. After a good breakfast we'll begin the adventure and head up into the forested mountains of the western Pyrenees. After lunch we head slightly south and towards our first of the 2 night stays near Alfaro.
19-20th Oct, Days 3 & 4. For day 3 we spend the whole day exploring the bewildering Bardenas Reales and its spectacular rock formations and desert landscape. Don't be surprised if you think you've somehow been transported to Utah!
Day 4 see's us head back up into the high mountains of the Navarra and Aragon regions where narrow gravel mountain passes and huge vista's will be the norm. before ending day 4 at our next 2 night stay near Ainsa.
21-22st Oct, Days 5 & 6. Day 5 and its time for some proper altitude! For the vast majority of the day we'll be comfortably above 3000ft and at times nearing 7000ft. The temperatures will be noticeably colder and there is a real chance of some snow and ice at the highest points.
Day 6 and we're continuing our trip over the high Pyrenees, weaving through villages, abandoned forts and spectacular viewpoints as we head towards our next 2 night stay in the stunningly beautiful Val de Aran.
23-24th Oct, Days 7&8. Day 7s loop is an absolute gem of a drive. Spectacular waterfalls, cliff edge shelf roads and ridiculously amazing scenery all rolled into one fantastic day in the mountains. You'll need your camera for the whole tour, but this is definitely one to make sure its got plenty of battery life left.
Day 8 see's us leave the high mountains of the Pyrenees and head slightly south and onto the Sierra's between Tremp and Barbastro, before making our way towards our next 2 night stay near Heusca.
25-26th Oct, Days 9 & 10. A superb days tracks are planned as we visit the Sierra de Guara with its many canyons and abandoned villages.
Day 10 see's us heading west and over the Sierra del Mondayo and the Sierra de Camero Viejo towards our final 2 night stay near Haro and the banks of the mighty Rio Ebro.
27-28th Oct, Days 11 & 12. Our last day on the tracks see's us head out and onto the Sierra de la Demanda and its stunning valleys and autumnal colours.
Day 12 and today is entirely up to yourselves. Depending on your plans, feel free to visit local towns and pick up those last few souvenirs before catching the ferry back to the UK or head off and continue your own adventure wherever that may be.

Whilst this isn't a true "overland" tour, it is worth carrying a few specific items that can help and assist with the enjoyment of the trip. Consider your particular vehicle and if having a few select spares with you could make all the difference. Things like common sensors that fail, a fan belt, spare air filter (its likely to be quite dusty, so I'd suggest bringing a couple anyway) and extra fluids and oils. Nothing overly complicated to change trackside, but just a few things that are easy to replace but annoying if you hadn't got one with you.

A 13 night camping tour of the off road wonder that is Portugal.
Steeped in history and bathed in warming sun for most of the year, its no wonder why Portugal is on most holidaymakers lists. We travel through mountains, deserts, old villages and coastal dunes as we work our way south with the coast never far away. At the halfway point (well, almost halfway) we have a rest day planned where everyone has the opportunity to do exactly as they please. The night before the day off we usually have a big group BBQ and enjoy the local hospitality.
The second half of the tour see's us head inland and steadily northwards as we weave our way to our end point near the town of Braganca. But the good thing is we do take our time and get to sample some of the greatest tracks and trails Portugal has to offer along the way.
The tour takes in 6 locations, with a minimum of 2 nights at each serviced campsite.
The route on the static days is a loop planned to cover both great tracks and specific points of interest.

Included in the tour
13 Nights camping at fully serviced sites

From our meeting point near the French & Spanish border until we finish on the Mediterranean coast, this traverse across the stunningly beautiful Pyrenees will truly embrace the culture, diversity and majesty of this mountain range.
10 nights/9 days of absolutely perfect trails, villages and food all neatly rolled up into a truly unique experience. We will venture through the Basque region and its formidable heritage, the deep lush valleys of the Parque Natural Valles Occidentales, the high passes of the Haute Pyrenees into Andorra and end our tour driving through the Parc Natural des Pyrenees Catalanes.
With an average of 4-5 hours of driving, thousands of photo opportunities and more than enough time to enjoy a substantial lunch break each day, this tour is far from rushed. We will be making a new camp each evening, so it is very much a "tour" in every sense of the word. But we arrive early each day and no day is a silly early start (unless the group wants that of course) so everyone will have time to relax.
There will be a 2 night stay mid-tour to allow the group a day off from driving. Here you can fill your day with one of the many local activities, visit the local towns or just relax and soak up the sun.

At the end point of the tour you have several options. We can say our goodbye's and hope we all have safe journey forward. Or you can join us on our Alps tour which starts a few days after this one ends.
Perfectly suited to having a couple of days off on the French Riviera relaxing in the sun before jumping back into your 4x4 and spending another 10 days exploring the majestic French Alps.

Another spectacular tour covering one of Europe's most iconic destinations. Towering over the French Riviera, the Alps offer some stunning driving just on the tarmac, but throw in some properly high altitude tracks, glaciers, year round snow and you've got yourself a perfect combo.
Starting the tour near the town of Grasse on the Cote d'Azur, we spend a couple of nights here to give us some time to explore the beautiful Prealpes and Provence regions and to get used to the roads and terrain. From here we head east and towards the Alps. This is where it becomes more of an overland adventure as its now 1 night per location and a good days driving in between. We will of course have more than enough time to enjoy the views, eat well and sample the local hospitality, so don't worry about that...
About a week later and we emerge from the mountains having driven some truly epic high mountain passes including the Col du Parpaillon and the Col de Sommeiller (toll road fee included in the price). Now we head west and towards Grenoble as our final location.

Designed to be both a stand alone tour in its own right and a perfect addition to our Pyrenees West 2 East Tour.
Contact us for an exclusive price for both tours and an extra 3 nights cross over accommodation on the French Riviera.

How does 7 days/8 nights camping in the warm spring sun of the south of France sound?
I'd say given how wet and windy Easter 2024 was, its probably quite an appealing thought?
This fantastic tour is planned to be as faff free and as family friendly as possible. We stay on 1 serviced campsite for the duration of the tour. So you can pitch up knowing you haven't got the fun and games of packing away again for a full week.
The route's planned for this tour are all SUV friendly. This means that whatever you use to green lane in the UK is absolutely more than fine for these tracks. That's not to say there wont be opportunity for the group to get stuck in at times and help each other through some of the more technical sections. There's more than likely going to be some snow on the higher passes as well, so a snowball fight at Easter in the south of France is absolutely on the cards.
There is a planned day off from driving mid tour. This is to give you time to visit local attractions, take part in any local activities or visit one of the many towns in the area. Or you can just chill out in the sun and enjoy the peace and quiet with a glass of wine.
A full list of what to bring and estimated costs will be supplied at the time of booking, but if you're unsure of what you'll need or have any questions feel free to contact us and we'll happily go through it with you.

The Pyrenees.
A geological marvel and contain some of the oldest rocks on earth. Being approximately 125 million years older than their much more well known cousins the Alps, this relatively under-visited mountain range can offer some truly spectacular scenery in quite a unpopulated environment. The Pyrenees also gets on average more snow than the Alps as well...
The first site we use is slightly south of the French town of Pau, perfectly situated on the edge of the Parc National des Pyrenees and prime for discovering the amazing Basque region. Our second site is on the Spanish/French/Andorran border and offers us the opportunity to drive some world famous tracks and trails at some genuine altitude.

The Alps.
Who hasn't heard of the Alps? The largest mountain range in Europe and home to plenty of very well known peaks and posh ski resorts. But we're not here for the skiing, we're here for some properly high altitude and narrow shelf road driving.
Our first campsite is near the beautiful Gorges du Verdon on the western edge of the Alps and a perfect location to start the adventure. The second site is truly Alpine! Our site is located at an altitude higher than any point of land in the UK at around 1500 metres above sea level. From this site we'll be able to traverse some of Europe's finest off road trails and experience the full majesty of the region.

During the 2 "sections" of each tour there will be a day off from driving for you to fully embrace the local culture and the plethora of activities each region offers. Be that rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, shopping or cuisine, each site has been chosen to make sure you have a lot of options...
The Combo Deal.
The 2 tours are more than capable of holding their own as stand alone tours and neither will leave you feeling disappointed. But why stop at just 1 mountain range? Why not full embrace the UK school holidays and bring the whole family down to the south of France for what is effectively 4 weeks of sun, adventure and memory making?
Combine the 2 tours and you get 12 nights camping along the Pyrenees, 2 nights camping on the French Riviera and 12 nights camping amongst the French Alps. You'll have 5-6 days off from driving for and your family to enjoy as you wish, although no days planned route is compulsory.
Each site has been chosen for its location and vicinity to a small town for supplies and eating options. Plus each site has laundry facilities for those all important tasks.
There is an option to upgrade the 2 night crossover and enjoy the luxury of a hotel or "glamping" experience. *Extra costs and T&C's apply, contact us for details.
